STUDIO VISITS
with Brenna Hodges
Welcome to the STUDIO VISITS series! This all started when freelance journalist and friend, Amelia Arvesen, invited me to join in on this project early this year. We were sitting down drinking coffee in the quaint and cozy space of Bastion coffee, talking about and dreaming up her own photoshoot when she brought up this new, bubbling project.
She told me that she had started her substack in the pandemic, ‘Honing Her Craft’, which centered around interviewing female artists. ‘Honing Her Craft’ has evolved over the years and taken different forms but she wanted to bring back the original project and give it new shape - not just centering female artists but artists of all genders and identities. I echoed that, I too, love peeking into the world of other artists. The first photoshoot I did of a person, rather than products or nature, was a painter. I contemplated doing an artist series at the time but never followed through. So when Amelia brought this idea to me, I offered up my photography to complement her interviews and now here we are!
Enter: our first artist interview with Brenna Hodges, an abstract painter here in Portland, Oregon. Amelia and Brenna talk about how space informs creation, process, what’s inspiring and where to get Brenna’s favorite cookie.
